This is the 'af0h Multi-band Doublet antenna'. Its a very affordable, extremely light, yet full performance 10-40 meter multi-band antenna. This antenna is so light (5 oz.) that it requires no center-support. How is this possible? Simple, by using a high-grade 2-conductor 24-gua. stranded copper wire for the entire antenna (even the feedline).
Since there is no coax, this antenna offers several advantages over the standard multi-band dipole. First, the weight is extremely low since coax is heavy - not to mention connectors, etc. Second, there is no coax loss when using a tuner. This wire operates exactly like ladder-line or twinlead during multi-band operation where SWR Losses can be disasterous using coax. Feedline impedence is approx. 130 ohms - simple to match with an Internal or External Tuner.
This antenna is a very efficient design for multi-band operation, since there are no Loads, Traps, Coils, etc. to introduce additional losses.
Although this antenna is advertised as a QRP Antenna, i've used it with 50-watt power levels on all bands with no problems at all.
The overall antenna dimensions are as follows = 46' flat-top (23' per side) plus 27' of feedline. By making this antenna 46' instead of the usual 44', efficiency on 40-meters is much higher. The overall length of each wire is 50' (23' + 27') - which has been shown to be the ideal length for a 10-40 meter multi-band antenna. With a good tuner, this antenna can be loaded up and used (with reduced efficiency) on 80-meters as well.
Please note that a tuner is required with this antenna. However, the internal ATU of my IC-703 Plus has no trouble loading this antenna on most bands all by itself.
The feedline end is left open, to facilitate easy hookup to the 'Open Wire' terminals on most tuners. At no additional cost, I can install an RCA Plug to the feedline end. This allows simple hookup using a 'PL-259 to RCA Female' adapter available from other vendors online. For rigs/tuners with BNC hookup, a 'BNC to Binding Post' adapter is available as well from other vendors online. If you want the RCA option, just indicate this at time of purchase.
Did I mention Portable? This antenna easily fits in a Zip-Loc bag for convenience and portability. Can't do that with a Coax-fed Dipole!
This antenna also comes with Snap-swivels installed on each end to facilitate fast, easy deployment. I've found that 10-lb. test Fishing Line is ideal for this antenna. It's easily transported, extremely light, very affordable, almost invisible (stealth operation), and more than strong enough for this application.
